Will a Dumpster Fit on My Driveway?

A roll-off dumpster fits on most driveways that are at least 10 feet wide and as long as the dumpster plus a little room. Our 10-yard is 12 feet long; the 20 and 30-yard are 22 feet. The truck typically needs about 60 feet of straight approach and 23 feet of overhead clearance.

How much space does each dumpster need?

Each dumpster needs a flat, firm spot a little bigger than its outside size, plus a straight path for the truck. The dumpster slides off the back of the truck on its rails, so the truck lines up in front of the spot and backs in.

SizeOutside L × WSpot to clear (typical)Truck approach
10-yard12 × 8 ftAbout 14 × 10 ftAbout 60 ft straight
15-yard16 × 7.5 ftAbout 18 × 9.5 ftAbout 60 ft straight
20-yard22 × 8 ftAbout 24 × 10 ftAbout 60 ft straight
30-yard22 × 8 ftAbout 24 × 10 ftAbout 60 ft straight
Typical figures. Overhead clearance of about 23 ft is needed because the truck bed lifts to slide the dumpster off.

Will a dumpster on my driveway crack the concrete?

Our drivers put wooden boards under the dumpster's steel rollers and rails before it touches the ground. The boards spread the load and keep metal off concrete and asphalt, which prevents the cracks and scratches that steel-on-concrete can cause. Avoid new concrete that is still curing.

Can the dumpster go on the street?

A dumpster can go on the street only where your city allows it, and many Texas cities require a right-of-way permit first. Rules, fees and lead times differ by city, so check with your city's public works or permit office before choosing a street spot. Your driveway avoids the permit question.

Local rules: see the service area pages for what we have confirmed in each city.

What happens if the truck can't reach the spot?

If the driver arrives and can't drop or pick up the dumpster because of parked cars, low wires or a locked gate, a $125 trip fee applies. That fee is called a dry run. The driver texts or calls 20–30 minutes ahead, which is your chance to move cars and open gates.

  • Trim low branches over the driveway.
  • Mark sprinkler heads, septic lids and buried lines near the spot.
  • Check your HOA rules. Some HOAs limit how long a dumpster can sit in a driveway.

More driveway placement questions

Can a dumpster go on grass?

It can on firm, dry ground, but lawns rut easily after rain and the truck needs a firm approach. A driveway or gravel pad is safer.

How close to the house can the dumpster go?

As close as the truck can back in straight with clearance above. Leave room to open the rear door and to walk around it.

Do I need to be home for delivery?

You don't need to be there. Clear the spot and leave a note or tell us where you want it. The driver confirms by text or call 20–30 minutes ahead.

Can I move the dumpster after it's delivered?

No, a loaded or empty roll-off can only be moved by the truck. Pick the spot carefully before delivery.
