A whole-house cleanout of about 1,500 to 2,500 square feet usually needs a 20-yard dumpster. A 1-car garage or one or two rooms fits a 10-yard. A 2-car garage or three to four rooms fits a 15-yard. A large estate or rental turnover takes a 30-yard.
Will household junk go over the weight limit?
Household junk rarely goes over the weight limit. EPA averages put furniture, boxes and household trash at about 250 to 300 pounds per cubic yard, so a full 20-yard dumpster weighs about 2.5 to 3 tons against 3 tons included. Cleanouts fill up by space first.
The exceptions are heavy items mixed in: a piano, an old safe, a load of books or paper files, or a shed's worth of paint cans and garden soil. Paint and chemicals are not allowed at all.
Break down tables, bed frames and shelving. Flat pieces take a fraction of the space.
What can't go in a cleanout dumpster?
Cleanouts turn up the items people forget are banned. Hazardous chemicals, wet paint and batteries cannot go in. Mattresses, tires and appliances with Freon go in for $50 each. Old electronics, propane tanks and pool chemicals should be set aside before the dumpster arrives.
- A refrigerator or freezer with Freon: $50. The refrigerant must be recovered before disposal under EPA 40 CFR 82.155.
- Car batteries: most auto parts stores take them back. Other batteries go to a household hazardous waste collection.

Can the dumpster sit in my driveway while I'm away?
The dumpster can sit in your driveway for the full 7 days whether you are home or not. You don't need to be there for delivery or pickup if the spot is clear. Boards under the rails protect the driveway. A tarp over the top at night keeps neighbors from adding to your load.
What does a cleanout dumpster rental cost?
Your 20-yard dumpster price includes delivery, pickup, 7 days and 3 tons. Weight over 3 tons costs $75 per ton, charged by the exact pound, not rounded up. A copy of the certified landfill scale ticket comes with your final invoice, emailed 3 to 5 business days after pickup.
Here is how the example works. The ticket shows 3.10 tons net. That is 0.10 tons over the 3 included tons. 0.10 × $75 = $7.50.
Other charges happen only if they apply: $25 for each day past 7, $50 per mattress, tire or Freon appliance, and a $125 trip fee if the driver cannot reach the dumpster.

Do I need to be home when the dumpster arrives?
You don't need to be there. Clear the spot, unlock the gate and leave cars out of the way. The driver calls or texts 20–30 minutes before arriving.
Can I put a couch and mattress in the dumpster?
Couches, chairs and other furniture go in at no extra charge. Mattresses and box springs are $50 each, because the landfill handles them separately.
What if neighbors put trash in my dumpster?
Their weight goes on your scale ticket. A tarp, keeping the dumpster in view of the house, and asking us about placement near the garage all help.
Is a dumpster or junk removal better for a cleanout?
A dumpster usually costs less when you have a lot of debris and can load it yourself. Junk removal makes sense for a few heavy items you can't lift. Compare both.
How fast can I get a cleanout dumpster?
