How to Load a Dumpster

Load heavy items first and spread them across the floor, break furniture down flat, fill gaps with small debris, and stop when the load is level with the top rim. Concrete, dirt, brick and sand stop at the halfway line. Nothing can stick out above the walls.

What is the right order to load a dumpster?

The right loading order is heavy and flat first, bulky next, loose debris last. Walk heavy items in through the rear door and spread them across the floor so the weight sits evenly over the rails. Then stack flat pieces and fill gaps.

  1. Open the rear doorWalk heavy items in instead of lifting them over the wall.
  2. Heavy items lowSpread them evenly from front to back.
  3. Flat pieces nextBreak down tables, cabinets and bed frames.
  4. Fill the gapsBags and small debris go in last, into the holes.
  5. Stop at the rimLevel with the top, nothing sticking out.

How full can I fill a dumpster?

Fill the dumpster level with the top rim and no higher. Texas law requires loads to be secured, so we can't haul an overloaded bin on the highway. If the load is above the rim, a $125 trip fee applies and the extra has to come out before transport.

See Texas Transportation Code, Chapter 725 on securing loads.

Why can concrete and dirt only go halfway?

Concrete, dirt, brick and sand can only go halfway up the walls because of highway weight limits. These materials are so dense that a full dumpster would be far heavier than the truck can legally carry. That is also why heavy debris only goes in our 10 and 15-yard dumpsters.

How do I keep the load light?

Keep the load light by keeping it dry and keeping it yours. Rain soaks into drywall, carpet and wood and adds weight you pay for. A tarp over the top at night keeps out both rain and neighbors' trash. Separate dense materials so you can see how much weight is going in.

More loading questions

Can I put things on top of the dumpster walls?

Nothing can rest on or stick above the walls. Long pieces should be cut down to fit inside.

Should I break down furniture?

Break it down when you can. A table with its legs off or a bed frame taken apart takes a fraction of the space.

Can I climb into the dumpster to pack it?

Use the rear door and watch for nails and sharp edges. Wear gloves and boots.

What if I fill the dumpster before I'm done?

Call for a swap: we pull the full one and drop an empty one. A swap is billed as a new rental.
